Earlier, he announced to issue the notification of big city status for Multan in next 48 hours. The CM has twice promised to give big city status to Multan in the past but the promise could not be fulfilled. He further told the journalists that the first phase of Metro bus-service Project would begin by December 30, 2014.
He announced to revive Government Degree College for Women Chowk Kachehri, saying the Women University would be set up at its own space. The CM declared that water filtration plants would be installed at union council level and a Water Filtration Authority would be set up to look after these plants. He said that 500 acre land for Nawaz Sharif Agriculture University was allocated in Jalalpur Pirwala. He assured the journalists that the funds of Journalist Colony would be transferred to MDA while 14 police stations would be made model after their shifting to their own buildings. He assured the residents of Multan that the projects like Ring Road, Motorway and other roads would be accomplished in shortest possible time. He declared that special budget would be allocated for the uplift of health and education sectors in Multan.

Land Data beung Computerized in Multan

The provincial government has set up a Computerized Survey Network in collaboration with Urban Development in all big cities of the province to bring houses under the property tax net and facilitate the people to register their houses online.
“Once setup is completed people could easily access information online regarding property tax.
Prerogative powers of the Excise and Taxation Department will also be reduced once this system starts operation” said Director Excise and Taxation Rawalpindi Shakeel-ur-Rehman while talking to media men here on Wednesday.
He said that the work on computerization of department’s record has been expedited and 70 per cent completed to identify houses out of tax net in the survey. He said that rest of the work would be completed next year. “Web-based computerized system has been introduced for registration of property tax which will help the provincial government to generate revenue by bringing houses still out of tax net,” he said, adding that teams comprising surveyors of Urban Development and inspectors of Excise and Taxation Department were paying door to door visits to collect data of the houses and register them.
He said that a special cell would be set up to deal with public complaints. So far, this system has been introduced in Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi Division, he informed.

World Space Week 2013 in Multan from Oct 4 to 10

 

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) will mark the World Space Week (WSW) 2013 in 11 major cities of the country from October 4 to 10.
The cities include Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Multan, Larkana, Bhawalpur, Gilgit and Abbotabad.
An official of SUPARCO informed that the World Space Week is the largest public space event in the world and that it is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.
Government agencies, Industries, schools, museums, planetariums and other institutions in over 100 nations participate in WSW. The theme of the WSW 2013 is `Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth'.
It was pointed out that the United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that the World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10.
These dates commemorate two events October 4, 1957 Launch of the first human-made earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration October 10, 1967. The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
SUPARCO, as a national space agency, has been regularly conducting WSW activities each year to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful usage amongst students and the masses in Pakistan since 2005.
This year, SUPARCO has extended WSW activities throughout Pakistan with the partnership of key educational institutions.
It will hold an Inauguration Ceremony on October 4 at SUPARCO headquarters to formally commence World Space Week 2013 celebration in Pakistan.
The chief guest for the ceremony will be Professor Dr Atta ur Rehman, Former Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
A specially designed mobile education bus equipped with multimedia will leave to create awareness of space through lectures, multimedia presentations and video shows in towns and villages of Sindh.
Space Family Fair will be held on October 5-6 at the PAF Museum here. The fair will include different colorful activities like sky observation, exhibition, philately stall, kids arena, water rocket demonstration, space movies, space studio etc.
The Water Rocket Competition will be held on October 9 at the SUPARCO headquarters.
SUPARCO, in collaboration with the PIA Planetarium Karachi, has also arranged Sky Simulation shows and lectures for school students on October 7, 8 and 9.

TDCP Office and Chenab Water Resort Proposed in Multan.

MULTAN: 

The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) plans to develop 13 recreational facilities in the south Punjab and start an open-roof bus service for tourists in Lahore, TDCP Managing Director Habibur Rahman Gilani said on Friday. He said the proposals had been sent to the Punjab government for final approval.

Gilani said that the feasibility report for a chairlift at Fort Munro hill station had been completed. Work on the project would begin as soon as the funds were released.
He said other projects included establishment of a water resort along River Chenab near Muzaffargarh, a resort along the River Indus in Dera Ghazi Khan, a stop-over at the Dada Fort near Girdo Mor (a few kilometers from Fort Munro), construction of a guest house in Kot Mithan Sharif, construction of tourist huts and a restaurant and starting of boat safari at Head Sidhnai, development of the Lal Sohanra National Park in Bahawalpur and construction of a TDCP resort in Fort Munro.
He said the construction of a TDCP office in Multan near Qasim Fort was also proposed.
He said the open roof bus service in Lahore, if approved, would take tourists from The Mall to historical landmarks in the city.

Federal Minister for Food Security Malik Sikandar Hayat Bosan disclosed that Metro Bus service will be launched in Multan with the collaboration of Turkey very soon.
Talking to a delegation of local workers, he added that Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif wanted to develop Multan on the pattern of Lahore. He said that Multan would be beautified and brought on par with other developed cities of the country. He disclosed that a number of new development projects for Multan were in the pipeline.
He said that the prime minister was determined to get the masses rid of problems and government's first 100-days performance was reflective of its commitments. He asked the workers to start preparations for local government elections. He claimed that Multan would prove a fortress of PML-N in upcoming local government polls.

PCCC Head Quarter Should Be Shifted to Multan

Speaker of National Assembly, Syed Fakhar Imam has suggested that the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) head quarter should be shifted to Multan which is the centre of the cotton belt in Southern Punjab as this zone produces 80 percent of total cotton production. In a press statement issued here on Monday, Syed Fakhar Imam said that PCCC has played a pivotal role in promoting cotton production in Pakistan.

PCCC is solely responsible to conduct research on cotton and its products. Cotton and cotton based products contribute 62 percent of Pakistan's total exports. 40 percent of the industrial labour is employed in the textile sector and 65 percent of local edible oil is extracted from cottonseed.

Recalling the history, Syed Fakhar Imam said the ICCC was established in 1923 under the Cotton Cess Act 1923, and its successor (PCCC) continues to perform its functions under the said statute. He mentioned that cotton production was one million bales in 1947 and now has reached 12 to 14 million bales. In 2005, the government decided to shift PCCC from its original offices located at Mai Lolachi Road to Karachi.

MULTAN, Sept 10 (APP): Pakistan is home to world’s oldest civilizations and there is dire need to make available sufficient facilities for the promotion of tourism in the country. Vice Chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Prof Dr Khawaja Alqama, said this while talking to a delegation of Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) which called on him on Tuesday at his office. 

Besides Ghandhara Civiliztion, he added, Pakistan has got several historic building of British era.
The country has all charming seasons and a rich variety of cultural traditions from the one end of the country to the other, the VC commented.
He underlined the need for resolving problems like professional guides, availability of scrumptious dishes, affordable tour packages and security.
Dr Alqama suggested the introduction of tourism as a subject along with training at college and university levels in addition to launching of concessional packages for students.
The BZU VC said that in this way students would get a chance to have a look at scenic beauty of the country.

MULTAN  - Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) has signed an agreement with Jamal Din Wali Sugar mills for purchasing 26 megawatt electricity on the directions of Ministry of Water & Power and Alternate Energy Board.
A ceremony was held at MEPCO Headquarters in which CEO MEPCO Engineer Abdul Mateen Khan and GM Admin Jamal Din Wali sugar mills Muhammad Safdar Kanjoo signed agreement. The electricity taken from Jamal Din Wali sugar mills would be included in the system at the end of November 2013 while the price fixed Rs 10.40 per unit for 30 years.
The MEPCO is the only distribution company which signed agreement for purchasing electricity from private sector under federal government’s Bagasse, Bio-Mass, and Co-generation policy 2013.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO MEPCO said thanked the Jamal Din Wali sugar mills for providing loan of Rs 70 million to MEPCO without interest for installing transmission line and the company would return it in next four years.
GM Admin sugar mills Safdar Kanjoo said that every Pakistani should play its role for eradication of energy crisis in the country. He said sugar mills administration was thankful of Ministry of Water and Power and Power which signed agreement with sugar mills first under fast track programme. Finance Director MEPCO Mian Ansar Mehmood, Project Director Shahid Hammed and Manger Commercial Imtiaz Ahmad were also present.

$160 Million Reading Project Being Launched for Literacy in Pakistan

MULTAN: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded the International Rescue Committee (IRC) $160 million to implement the Pakistan Reading Project – an extensive education programme aimed at tackling one of the highest child illiteracy rates in the world, said a press release issued on Saturday.
The IRC and its 10 partner organisations will work to improve the quality of reading education in 38,000 schools and advance and develop the reading instruction skills of 94,000 teachers.
John Keys, the IRC International programmes’ senior vice president, said that the launch of the project represented “a long-term commitment from the IRC and the USAID to reach 3.2 million children with improved reading programmes. He said the project would ensure that 2.5 million of these would start reading at grade-level.
“We anticipate that these boys and girls will carry these skills with them into secondary and tertiary education, and then into adulthood. They are the future of Pakistan,” he said.
According to a study by the Brookings Institution in 2010, Pakistan was one of the few countries where illiteracy rates were increasing. The study found that there were 47 million illiterate adults in the country and the number was likely to go up to 50 million by 2015.
According to government statistics, Pakistan’s primary school enrollment rate is 66 per cent and 7.2 million primary school age children are not in school.
The IRC and its partners will be working with Pakistan’s provincial and local governments to provide the highest quality literacy instruction in primary schools across the country. It would focus on undeserved rural communities where access to elementary education is limited.
John Shumaker, a career global educator, who would be overseeing the IRC project, said that the foundation of a high-performing education system was primary school.
“If we make an impact there for children in Pakistan, the benefits will be profound and long term,” he added

A bill has been passed on name of Nawaz Sharif Agriculture University Multan. People have concerns about this name. They want it to be changed to Quaid-e-Azam Agriculture University. But Punjab assembly, with PMLN dominant has passed a bill against this change.

26000 Students Enrolled in Multan

MULTAN:  “As many as 18,000 out-of-schools children in Multan district have been enrolled at schools in the last 18 days. Another 8,000 children have been enrolled in the Bahawalnagar district in the last three weeks,” District Coordination Officer Gulzar Shah said on Tuesday.

Lauding the efforts of the civil society, the district administration and Education Department, the DCO said that the enrolment had picked up over the last few weeks. He said over 80 per cent of these children were from the villages and slums.
The DCO said that education officials had monitored 24 schools in the district on the last two days. They specifically monitored the enrolment programme. He said the campaign will continue till September 30.
Education EDO Samsher Khan told The Express Tribune that the Punjab government had directed the officials to keep focused on children of nomadic families and those living in extremely poor vicinities.
He said the Education Department had been working effectively in Bahawalnagar district. This district includes Minchanabad, Haroonabad, Bahawalanagar, Chistian and Fort Abbas sub districts. He said the campaign had received a positive response from homeless people, especially in Haroonabad. Deputy District Officer (Education) Abdul Ghani said that 60 per cent of the new enrolments from Haroonabad were girls.

Multan: Now Mango Will Be Available for Whole Year, in Dried Form

MULTAN : Locally produced dried mango, displayed at a stall at a trade fair organised by the MCCI, received immense admiration. Saad Qureshi, a visitor to the trade fair, expressed pleasure to witness dried mangos. He said it had orginal taste and he would send them to his relatives in Lahore.  Miss Zahida Hameed, another visitor, also lauded the locally introduced product and said the dried mango would a good addition to service to guests throughout the year especially during extreme winter.

The dried mango is being prepared at the Lutafabad mango farm, for the first time in the region. Though the seasonal mango is available these days, yet dried mango would be available throughout the year, Mango Growers Association President Maj (Retd) Tariq said. About dried mango, he said it would also be exported to the Flippines, Thailand, the US and other countries. He said the mangos were dehydrated in a drier and then processed in slices and cubes. He said they had produced 288 kilogrammes of dried mangos from 1,000 kg mangos. He said dried mangos would also provide handsome earnings to local women for removing its skin and cutting it into pieces.
