Multan International Airport will be completed by the end of current
calendar year with an estimated cost of Rs 8 billion, a modern air
conditioned cargo complex would also be completed, said Federal
Secretary Aviation Muhammad Ali Gardezi. He was briefing the local
journalists during the visit of airport building. He was not satisfied
with the standard, quality of work in the project and stressed the need
for improving the civil works as per international standards.
He said a link road will be constructed from Jamilabad to airport to provide direct access to passengers to the airport and told that we have negotiated with army officers for land acquisition in Cantonment area for laying the sewer lines and construction roads. Gardezi said that Mepco's Superintending Engineer Saeed Ahmed had agreed to establish a grid station near Sikandari nullah subject to the provision of land for this purpose.
The Civil Aviation has agreed to purchase a piece of land for the grid station, which would help in smooth supply of 3.8MW electricity. The new airport project was initiated in 2008 and was to be completed in 2012 with an estimated cost of Rs 4 billion, which was to be invested by civil aviation but now the cost escalated to Rs 8 billion.
Local journalists also highlighted the flaws in construction work and drew the attention of the Federal Secretary. On a question Brigadier Bilal Hameed (Retd), a project director in head quarter admitted that control tower could not be functional on schedule because its contractor ran away and he moved to the court against Civil Aviation. Now, he had lost the case and we have re-allotted the contract to a well reputed firm. However, he did not agree with the questioner that the cost of airport was escalated by 100 per cent.
