Multan International Airport Will be Completed Soon

Multan International Airport will be completed by the end of current calendar year with an estimated cost of Rs 8 billion, a modern air conditioned cargo complex would also be completed, said Federal Secretary Aviation Muhammad Ali Gardezi. He was briefing the local journalists during the visit of airport building. He was not satisfied with the standard, quality of work in the project and stressed the need for improving the civil works as per international standards.

He said a link road will be constructed from Jamilabad to airport to provide direct access to passengers to the airport and told that we have negotiated with army officers for land acquisition in Cantonment area for laying the sewer lines and construction roads. Gardezi said that Mepco's Superintending Engineer Saeed Ahmed had agreed to establish a grid station near Sikandari nullah subject to the provision of land for this purpose.

The Civil Aviation has agreed to purchase a piece of land for the grid station, which would help in smooth supply of 3.8MW electricity. The new airport project was initiated in 2008 and was to be completed in 2012 with an estimated cost of Rs 4 billion, which was to be invested by civil aviation but now the cost escalated to Rs 8 billion.

Local journalists also highlighted the flaws in construction work and drew the attention of the Federal Secretary. On a question Brigadier Bilal Hameed (Retd), a project director in head quarter admitted that control tower could not be functional on schedule because its contractor ran away and he moved to the court against Civil Aviation. Now, he had lost the case and we have re-allotted the contract to a well reputed firm. However, he did not agree with the questioner that the cost of airport was escalated by 100 per cent.

Muhammad Bin Qasim International Airport Multan

Airport once outside Multan city is now inside the city due to city growth. Few passenger international flights to Dubai and many cargo services make it international. Now new state of art passenger terminal a longer and broader runway, and parking being constructed. Plan is to start direct flight to Europe.

Multan: Muhammad Bin Qasim International Airport Plan
Muhammad Bin Qasim International Airport traces its origins to the British Empire, when the Royal Air Force used the open space to fly in and out of the Multan region during 1919. The area was used for aircraft that were able to land on gravel and grass surfaces, however, there was very little development to the area. In 1934, Imperial Airways started to use the airfield for civil aircraft flights since Multan was considered a strategic position within the Punjab province of India. It was not until 1938 that Imperial Airways started to operate a regular flight out of Multan.

Direct Hajj Flights started from Multan Ibne Qasim International Airport after efforts of PM Pakistan.
