The district government of Multan has evolved a project with the
collaboration of Italy for the conservation and revival of centuries-old
historical heritage of walled city Multan. This was disclosed by the
District Coordination Officer Zahid Saleem Gondal after a meeting with
an Italian delegation here on Monday. He added that the project would be
supervised by Italian experts while Punjab Government would directly
monitor it.
He disclosed that a two-step feasibility report had been prepared for the walled city conservation project.
He added that the project had been given to local government department Multan and Sarafa Bazaar would be restored in first phase. "The bazaar will be cleared of all encroachments while some ancient buildings in Haram Gate and Pak Gate area have also been marked for restoration in first phase," he told the delegation. He said that earlier the conservation work of Moosa Pak Darbar had also been done under Pakistan Italian Debt Swap Agreement.
Giving further details, he said that the walled city was consisted of three union councils and 700 old and dangerous buildings had been marked in this area. He said that the above mentioned buildings would either be demolished or conserved while the occupants of these buildings would be shifted to other places. "We have located 32 acres of state lands where three storey buildings will be constructed and the residents of old buildings will be allotted flats in these buildings," he added. He said that the project would soon be sent for the approval of Chief Minister.
FUNDS RELEASE FOR UPLIFT: Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Khawaja Muhammad Usman has demanded the federal government to release funds for the completion of different road and communication projects in South Punjab. In a statement issued here on Monday, he demanded quick completion of Multan-Faisalabad motor way to facilitate the people and boost the trade in this area. He added that the construction of bridge on river Indus at Nishtar Ghat (Kot Mithan) to connect the cities of Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur and Rojhan with Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Sukkur, Hyderabd and Karachi should also be initiated. He lamented that work on different mega projects came to a standstill for the last one year due to non-availability of funds. He said that Double Phatak to Chowk Naag-Shah road must be completed immediately so that alternate way could be utilised to reach to Karachi, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Shujabad and Bahawalpur.
