Multan Era of Gararas in India

“Gharara was once an everyday wear for the Lucknowi ladies, but gradually starting falling into the formal Indian wear category because of the heavy embellishments and different materials that were being used to make these,” says Ambreen Khan, a fashion designer.

A gharara is fitted from the waist to the knees where 10 to 12 panels are added, which flare out into a skirt. The gharara, therefore, creates a slimmer silhouette. It can be traced back to the Multan era, when it was worn by all classes. The nawabs would wear it with brocade, an effect best created in Umrao Jaan.
