Cracks in 680 years old Shah Rukne Alam Mausoleum Multan
Saturday, October 12, 2013 - Multan—The Punjab Auqaf secretary and the Multan commissioner have taken notice of cracks in the wall of the 680-year-old mausoleum of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam after the archaeology department pointed out that water from two ablution points posed a threat to the historical site. The pre-Mughal era masterpiece can safely be dubbed as the symbol and glory of Multan and according to SDO archaeology department Multan Malik Ghulam Muhammad, the east-north portion of the wall near the ablution point (Wuzu Khana) has been affected by salt and cracks in the wall were visible.

One small ablution point operating inside the mausoleum was closed few days ago while another bigger one built outside but attached to the east-north corner of the wall around six months ago was closed in July after water started flowing towards the wrong direction i.e the foundation of wall, Punjab secretary/Chief administrator Auqaf Dr Saqib Aziz and Director Estate Auqaf Tariq Zaman visited the mausoleums of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani on Friday where they paid respect to the saints besides inspecting the damaged portion of the mausoleum of Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam, Zonal administrator Auqaf Multan Mehmoodul Hassan told APP.

Water also damaged a 100-foot portion of the boundary wall that was rebuilt by the Punjab archaeology department in December 2012, at a cost of Rs 2.7 million. Mahmoodul Hassan said the two ablution points would remain closed to avoid water penetration into the monument’s foundations. He said the commissioner had asked EDO Finance Chaudhry Aslam to look into the matter. He said that SDOs of Archaeology and Auqaf departments and he himself would hold a meeting with Director Gardens Farooq Dogar on the next working day to evolve a strategy to strengthen the mausoleum’s affected portions.
